Voted the best Greenway in Europe in 2009 The Sierra Greenway is a scenic cycling and walking train that runs for 37km between the Spanish towns of Olvera, Coripe and Puerto Serrano. Originally intended as a an agricultural railway to connect the inland farming towns of the Sierra de Las Nieves areas.
The project was a marvel of engineering of its time -55 tunnels, 7 bridges and 2 viaducts through the incredible Andalusian countryside would have made it a breathtaking journey. Alas the onset of the Spanish Civil War and then WW2 mean the project was never completed and the rails never laid. For years the Stations were peacefully occupied by Spanish families, farm and rail workers.
The greenway is now a beautiful cycling, worse riding and walking route where families can enjoy the views, tunnels and viaducts on foot on on bicycle, the station at Coripe is now a Hostal and tapas restaurant for a well reserved break as you amble through the illuminated tunnels and bridges over the Olive groves. At the 12km mark you come to the spectacular Peñón de Zaframagón – an elevated bridge dominated by a large grey cliff that houses one of Europes largest natural Vulture colonies, huge Griffon vultures with 3m wingspans circle overhead, rising and falling with the Spanish air.
You of course don’t need to do the entire round trip of 37km each way. It’s common to see young families on bikes and buggies doing short sections and having picnics in any of the many designated areas.
Destination Marbella can provide minibus transport, bicycle hire and even a tour guide if needed.
