La Ruta del Castaño Santo ( The route of the sacred Chestnut tree) is a beautiful established walking and mountain biking trail running directly from the Sierra de las Nieves national park near Ronda all the way down through the dense pine forests of the Sierra to La Quinta where you can exit back onto the coast at Nueva Andalucía.
Ideal for walking or mountain biking this beautiful scenic route cuts a directly through the wide La Quinta Valley allowing beautiful views to La Concha, Istán, Monte Mayor and Benahavis. With waterfalls, mountain goats and even deer to see – its a wonderful day for trekking or mountain bike enthusiasts.
The Castaño (Chestnut tree) that the trail is named for is accessible via a narrow trail around 15km from La Quinta, situated in a clearing on one side of the valley. This truly enormous and ancient tree is thought to be around 2000 years old – so would have been sprouting in this very spot around the time of Christ (hence the name), the unique position within the valley itself has meant that over even a time frame this long, this tree has been protected from winds, floods and forest fires to grow to such incredible dimensions.
